Our Favourite Teachers at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry

13 August, 2018

Another scholastic year is just around the corner and by now you are probably wondering which teachers will be entrusted with your (or your children’s) education for the next nine months. Which is why our team at Yorkie – providers of school uniforms in Malta -  has compiled a list of our favourite fictional teachers from the Harry Potter series.

1. Professor McGonagall

“You look in excellent health to me, Potter, so you will excuse me if I don’t let you off homework today. I assure you that if you die, you need not hand it in.”

Coming across Minerva McGonagall initially, one might be intimidated by her facial expression and serious demeanour. But as much of a strict disciplinarian as she is, she is as nurturing as she is stern. Although she is the school’s deputy headmistress and Head of Gryffindor House, she doesn’t abuse her authority like some others do, nor does she show preferential treatment. The no-nonsense, witty Professor also teaches Transfiguration, a dangerous and complex form of magic. Why do we love her? She is fiercely loyal, and in times of stress, Dumbledore, The Order of The Phoenix and her students can always count on McGonagall rising to the occasion, proving she’s even willing to risk her career and life for them.

2. Hagrid

“Well yeh might’ve bent a few rules, Harry, bu’ yeh’re all righ’ really, aren’ you?”

He may not be the Hogwarts teacher students take the most seriously, but he is without a doubt one of the series’ most loved characters. Apart from teaching ‘Care of Magical Creatures’, Hagrid is also the school’s gamekeeper, not to mention Dumbledore’s entrusted errand boy. He may be half giant, but Hagrid’s a sensitive soul, with a particular fondness of creatures of all shapes and sizes, and is pretty much the most loyal, genuine character you’d ever come across if you were lucky enough to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

3. Lupin

“Full of dark magic? Do you really think so, Severus? It looks to me as though it is merely a piece of parchment that insults anyone who tries to read it. Childish, but surely not dangerous?”

It is not every day that you are taught Defence Against the Dark Arts, much less by a teacher who happens to be a werewolf (albeit an amiable one)! Professor Lupin serves as a great mentor for Harry and is the one who taught him the Patronus charm for which he was so famous. He is a brave, hands-on teacher, and the fact that he always seems to carry chocolate around with him as a remedy is just one other reason to love the scruffy professor.

4. Professor Flitwick

“…remember, swish and flick. And saying the magic words properly is very important too.”

Other than having what’s probably one of the coolest subjects to teach, the Charms master is a gentle soul who encourages students to experiment with their own magic. What he lacks in stature (due to his goblin descent - he needs to stand on a pile of books in class), he makes up for in skill, earning him respect among students and colleagues alike. Flitwick is also often entrusted with decorating the school with charms for special events, such as when he adorns the Great Hall with live fairies and golden bubbles on Christmas Eve.

Here’s hoping your teachers this year will be as amazing and the ones on this list! And remember, if you still haven’t bought your garb for this year, come over to Yorkie - leading manufacturer and provider of school uniforms in Malta!
